This series of paintings on oversized paper, titled Voyager, is my first exploration of abstract landscapes. In this extension of my art practice, the person traversing the landscape is a focus of my abstract consideration.
This artwork was created in 3 different homes, and after it’s creation travelled with me from California to Mexico (2017) to Massachusetts (2018). I painted the large works in sumi ink with the same house paint brush that I painted the walls of my first Los Angeles apartment (2015).
MATERIALS AND IT’S INFLUENCE
Drawing with sumi ink is a bold statement that cannot be reversed or covered up. It’s origins for calligraphy on paper brings me a sense of writing a letter to someone close, something that is seen and felt. With paper, I feel a temporal, fragile essence.
